New Delhi, December 7: The voting for all the five poll bound states are over and the news channels are all set with their exit poll predictions for the Assembly elections – held in Mizoram on November 28.

India Today in its prediction - along with research agency Axis - predicted that Congress is likely to lose in the state and would settle down with only 8-12 seats. While opposition MNF might get victory in 16-22 seats. However, ZPM likely to become the kingmaker in the state with winning 8-12 seats.

According to the Elections Commission guidelines, no news channel or media organisation is allowed to publish the exit poll predictions prior to 5:30 pm, as voting at some of the polling booths is extended beyond the stipulated time for a few minutes. In the Assembly elections – held on November 28 for 40 seats – 80 percent polling was recorded. 209 candidates are in the fray and among them 15 are women. 7.70 crore voters – 3.94 crore women and 32,545 new voters – participated in the festival of democracy, by exercising their rights in 1,164 polling stations in eight districts of the state.

Ruling Congress has fielded 40 candidates and equal number of candidates were fielded by the opposition party – Mizo National Front. However, Bharatiya Janata Party and Zoram Peoples' Movement (ZPM) are contesting in 39 seats. Among other parties which are contesting in the elections include – People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) and Meghalaya-based National People’s Party (NPP).

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, contesting for third straight term in the state, won 34 seats in 2013 Assembly Elections for Congress, while former chief minister Pu Zoramthanga’s MNF won only five seats.
