#MeToo in India: Rahul Gandhi Breaks Silence, Says 'Space Closing For Those Who Don't Treat Women With Respect'
In a tweet, Rahul Gandhi said women should be treated with respect and dignity, adding that truth must be revealed for a change in society.
New Delhi, October 12: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday supported women coming out with their stories of sexual harassment at workplace in the #MeToo campaign in the country. In a tweet, Rahul Gandhi said women should be treated with respect and dignity, adding that truth must be revealed for a change in society.
"It’s about time everyone learns to treat women with respect and dignity. I’m glad the space for those who don't, is closing. The truth needs to be told loud and clear in order to bring about change," Gandhi tweeted. The Congress leader may raise the issue of #MeToo further as Minister of State for foreign affairs MJ Akbar has been accused of sexual misconduct by women journalists.
At a press conference on Thursday, Rahul Gandhi refused on comment on the #MeToo campaign, saying he will hold a separate press conference to speak on the issue. "#MeToo is a very big issue. I will comment on it in a further press conference," he said. The Congress has been demanding a probe and resignation of Akbar.
The #MeToo movement has gathered pace over the last fortnight with scores of women speaking out on sexual harassment at the workplace and support pouring in from various quarters. Demands have escalated for action against Akbar who has been accused by several former women colleagues of sexual harassment when he served as an editor at various media organisations.
