In Meghalaya, the pre-polling has seen extreme violence in the form of killing of the Nationalist Congress Party candidate Jonathone Sangma who was assassinated on February 18. The contest this time seems to be between the ruling Congress party(INC) and the National People’s Party (NPP), founded by former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma. The party is now led by Sangma's son Conrad. The BJP has formed an alliance with the NPP in Manipur, and though according to the exit polls it is not likely to get significant number of seats in Meghalaya, the BJP may still play an important role in government formation if the regional parties manage to outvote the ruling Congress party. The BJP has fielded candidates in 47 constituencies this time. Experts believe that the coalition formed by ethnic parties in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills can upset the equations. Stay tuned with Latestly to remain updated on the poll outcome.
