Meghalaya Assembly Elections 2018: 12 Candidates, Including Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh Filed Nomination For Upcoming Polls

Shillong, February 3: With polls in Meghalaya just round the corner, 12 candidates including state Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh have filed nomination on 4th day today. The nominations are being filed for Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election which is due this month on February 27, 2018. Meghalaya comprises of 60 assembly constituencies. A total of 55 constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Tribes and the remaining are for the general candidates.
At present, Meghalaya is under the rule of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma who belongs to the Congress party. Sangma has been winning for five consecutive terms from Ampatigiri constituency since 1993. This election, he will be contesting from two assembly seats - Ampatigiri and Songsak under Tura parliamentary constituency in the Garo Hills region.
In its first, Verified Voter’s Paper Trail (VVPATs) will be used during the polling in Meghalaya. As per reports, the total number of electorates in the state is 18,31,487 with a total number of 3,082 polling stations in the 60 Assembly Constituencies. As per details by the Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya, out of the 3,082 polling stations, 2,025 are classified as normal polling stations, 536 as vulnerable, 454 as critical and 67 as both vulnerable and critical. The official also informed that over 21,000 polling officials would be engaged in the conduct of the entire election process.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday released the list of candidates for Meghalaya assembly elections which include the names of former Congress minister A L Hek, former NCP state president Sanbor Shullai and eight other former MLAs. The assembly elections in three northeastern states -- Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura will be held this month. Tripura- with 60 assembly seats will go to polls on February 18 while Meghalaya and Nagaland will vote on February 27 for 60 Assembly seats each. It must be noted that the results of all the three state assembly elections will be announced on March 3, 2018.
