New Delhi, December 11: BSP chief Mayawati tweeted on Wednesday and reiterated the Bahujan Samaj Party's stand on the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019. Mayawati said that her party is against the bill and will vote against it in the Rajya Sabha. Mayawati called the bill "unconstitutional" and said that it divides the people of the country on religious lines. The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday, December 9. Home Minister Amit Shah had tabled the bill in the Lower House, which was passed with 311 members voting in favour of the bill and 80 opposing it. The BSP chief's tweet comes on the day when the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 is tabled in the Rajya Sabha. The Upper House of Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha) will decide on the bill as debate is underway in the House.

The BSP has been opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 since the start and has voiced its opposition over the issue that the bill is based on religion. Mayawati had said earlier that the bill is unconstitutional as it divides the people of India on religious identity.
In Rajya Sabha, the government faces a comparatively stringent task as the NDA numbers add up to 114 -- seven short of the halfway majority mark. However, the party is hopeful of getting it passed in the Rajya Sabha. The contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2019 was tabled in the Rajya Sabha by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The proposed law is to be taken up for consideration and passage by the Upper House, two days after the Lok Sabha cleared the law with a brute majority.
