New Delhi, August 25: Maneka Gandhi, the Union Minister for Women and Child Development, has said that the next big thing in disruptive innovation is "clean meat". She said that meat grown in labs from stem cells of animals is the next disruptive innovation after electricity and information technology.
The minister made the remark while speaking at a summit 'Future of protein-Food Tech Revolution.' The summit was first of its kind to be held in India. Gandhi also added that a private survey showed that 66 percent of meat consumers are willing to accept meat grown in lab. The minister termed it as Ahimsa (Non-violent) meat.
Maneka Gandhi also claimed that several of the top IT firms are investing in research on clean meat technology. Talking about the survey, the minister said that 46 percent consumers are open to the idea of buying clean meat on a daily basis. She also claimed that the report findings mention that 53 percent people who eat meat are willing to replace it with clean meat.
Gandhi informed about cellular meat saying that it is available but the process of making the cellular meat commercialised is pending. The minister, who is known for her work in the field of protection of animals, added that allowing foreign countries to distribute the cellular meat would be costly. She emphasised on ushering in a "second disruption" so as to replace animal meat by clean meat, said a report in the English daily The Times of India.
