New Delhi, May 30: Maneka Gandhi is likely to be the pro-tem or interim Speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. Gandhi became MP for the eight-term and is among the senior-most members of the Lower House. She Gandhi was a Union Minister in the first Narendra Modi-led NDA government from 2014 to 2019. She was Union minister for women and child development. The 62-year-old BJP leader had won from the Sultanpur seat in Uttar Pradesh. During her election campaigning, she had sparked a controversy saying that she won't work for the Muslims in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur if they don't vote for her in the upcoming polls.
The main duty of the pro-tem Speaker is to administer the oath of office to new members of the Lok Sabha. A temporary post, the pro-tem Speaker presides over the first meeting of lower House of Parliament after the general election besides presiding over the sitting in which the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected if it is a newly constituted House.
Narendra Modi on Thursday took oath as the Prime Minister of the country for the second consecutive term. Along with PM Modi 57 Union ministers including 24 cabinet ministers also took the oath. Prominent faces which were included in the council of ministers include Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Smriti Irani and Nirmala Sitharaman.
