Kolkata, May 15: A day after a bust of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was vandalised, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other leaders of Trinamool Congress (TMC) kept the picture of the noted reformer as display picture (DP) on Twitter and Facebook. TMC's official Twitter handle and Facebook account were also changed with a picture of Vidyasagar, a key figure of the Bengal Renaissance.

A bust of Vidyasagar installed at Vidyasagar College was damaged on Tuesday during a violent clash between workers of TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The clash broke out during BJP chief Amit Shah's roadshow. The TMC blamed BJP workers for vandalisation of Vidyasagar's bust. Banerjee is scheduled to take out a protest rally later today to protest the smashing of the bust of the social reformer by alleged BJP activists. The CPI(M) has also called for protest rallies against the incident. The intellectuals of the city will take out a protest march from College Street on Wednesday evening. Banerjee had blamed Amit Shah and BJP for violence and said that he shouldn't have been given permission for a roadshow. Tajinder Bagga Arrested by West Bengal Police Following Violence at Amit Shah's Kolkata Roadshow.

"What does Amit Shah think of himself? Is he above everything? Is he God that no one can protest against him?” the chief minister had said. Hitting back, Shah held a press conference earlier today and blamed TMC workers for the violence. Shah also hit out at the Election Commission for "not being impartial" in West Bengal and said it remained a mute spectator and did not act despite complaints of poll rigging in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls.

"Attempts at election rigging are happening in West Bengal but the Election Commission has remained a mute spectator. It should intervene," Shah told reporters. The BJP chief said after each of the six phases of polling in the state, the BJP approached the Election Commission and sought action for the incidents of violence and rigging but not once has the poll panel ordered a repoll anywhere.
