Kolkata, May 28: Mamata Banerjee-led party has started losing ground in West Bengal as three Trinamool Congress MLAs and its 50-60 councillors joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday. Among those who defected include BJP leader Mukul Roy’s son and suspended TMC legislator Subhrangshu Roy, along with 16 TMC Councillors of the Kanchrapara Municipality. BJP National General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said, “Three MLAs and 50-60 Councillors are joining BJP today. Such joinings will continue in future also.” He added that elections were held in seven phases in West Bengal, joinings in BJP will also happen in seven phases. Today was just the first phase.

The defections came just days after the saffron party’s landslide victory in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. In West Bengal, the BJP gave a tough fight to the ruling TMC. After, BJP’s resounding victory in the general elections, Narendra Modi will take oath as the Prime Minister of the country for the second consecutive times. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to be held on May 30 at 7 pm in Rashtrapati Bhawan.
