Mamata Banerjee Biopic 'Baghini' Faces Trouble As EC Orders Stay on Trailer Release Amid Lok Sabha Elections 2019
Election Commission stays release of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s biopic 'Baghini' ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
Kolkata, April 24: The Election Commission has ordered the Trinamool Congress to remove the trailer of 'Baghini' - biopic made on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's life. The order has been given to the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal and stated that the release of the movie to be delayed until the results of the Lok Sabha Elections are out in May.
Taking cognisance of the complaint filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party which sought a stay on the release of 'Baghini', Election Commission had ordered that trailer be removed from the social media handle and also stated that the ban would be imposed on the movie similar to Prime Minister's biopic. In its April 10 order, the apex poll conducting body had observed that no biopic be released before the elections are concluded. Earlier, challenging the Vivek Oberoi starrer PM Narendra Modi's biopic ban, BJP moved to Supreme Court. There too the Election Commission state that any biopic during the elections should not be allowed to release, as it might influence the voters' decision and dampen the spirit of democracy. Citing the ban on PM Modi's biopic, the ordered the TMC to remove trailers from all three social media platforms till the Model Code of Conduct is in place.
