Chennai, August 7: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, speaking at the event to mark the first death anniversary of former chief minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK leader M Karunanidhi, expressed “concern” at the political situation in the nation and wished that Farooq Abdullah could attend the meeting in Chennai today, on Wednesday. ‘BJP Spreading Fake News About West Bengal’, Says CM Mamata Banerjee.

Addressing the gathering at the YMCA hall in Chennai, Mamata Banerjee compared M Karunanidhi to Mahatma Gandhi and BR Ambedkar and said that Karunanidhi worked for the welfare of the people in the state.

Talking on the abrogation of Article 370, Mamata said, “We're really concerned. Sometimes, political party can take a decision, but if they take a decision for Tamil Nadu, they've to take people of Tamil Nadu in confidence. If they take a decision for West Bengal, they've to take people of West Bengal in confidence.”

“Today I thought that Farooq Abdullah ji should have attended this meeting, but he is not able to come. I saw a video yesterday, he was crying that he cannot even go to his daughter's house.”

On Tuesday, the day when Lok Sabha passed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, and amid reports that Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have been arrested, Banerjee questioned the alleged arrests and said that the National Conference (NC) and People's Democratic Party (PDF) leaders were not terrorists to be arrested.
