West Bengal, May 31: The results of the by-elections of Maheshtala assembly seat in West Bengal will be declared today. Counting of votes will start from 8 am today, and polling in the region took place on May 28. 73 percent votes were polled in Maheshtala Vidhan Sabha by-election. Voting remained peaceful in the midst of tight security as 2.58 lakh voters exercised their franchise at 283 booths of the constituency out of which 43 were marked as sensitive.
The tussle is between three political parties- Trinamool Congress Party (TMC), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress and CPI (Marxist) in the constituency. Kasturi Das from the TMC had won the seat in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, 2016. She had won the seat by a good margin of 12, 452 votes. The reason for the by-polls now is due to the death of Kasturi Das in February this year.
This time the major candidates in the fray are Dulal Das, widower of Kasturi Das, BJP's Sujit Ghosh and Left-Congress candidate Prabhat Chowdhury. Das even accused BJP of distributing money to the voters. The BJP candidate is retired IPS officer Sujit Ghosh. The Left has joined hands with Congress, and their candidate is Prabhat Chowdhury.
