Kolkata, May 28: By-elections will be held in the Maheshtala assembly seat in West Bengal on Monday, May 28. The Maheshtala assembly by-elections will see a three-cornered bypoll contest between the Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress and CPI(Marxist) combine, who have joined hands for the by-elections. The campaigning, which ended on Friday, saw a last minute excruciating effort by all the three parties. The assembly bypoll has gained importance considering the coming 2019 General Elections. Date of voting and results: As mentioned above, the Maheshtala assembly seat will go for bypoll election today, Monday, May 28. The counting of the votes is scheduled on Thursday 31, following which we shall have the results the same day.
Last result: Kasturi Das from the All India Trinamool Congress Party (TMC) had won the seat in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly election, 2016. She had won the seat by a handsome margin of 12, 452 votes.
Reason for bypoll: Kasturi Das, who was the MLA from Maheshtala seat, passed away in February 2018 following which the date for by-election was announced.
Candidates in Fray: The major candidates in fray are Kasturi Das's husband Dulal Das, BJP's Sujit Ghosh and Left-Congress candidate Prabhat Chowdhury. Kasturi Das was the MLA from the seat and now the TMC has appointed her husband Dulal Das to contest the bypoll. The BJP candidate is retired IPS officer Sujit Ghosh who has generated some buzz. The Left has joined hands with Congress and their candidate is Prabhat Chowdhury.
