In the 288-member assembly, the BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 105 seats, while its longtime ally, Shiv Sena bagged 56 seats. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance was in a comfortable position to form the government. However, the Shiv Sena refused to support the BJP after the saffron party rejected the Thackeray-led party’s demand for equal power-sharing including the Chief Minister post for 2.5 years. The Shiv Sena then started other options including forming an alliance with the NCP and the Congress.
The state is under the President’s Rule since November 12 as no political party was able to form the government. After the imposition of the President’s Rule, the Shiv Sena has intensified its efforts to form the anti-BJP alliance.
