Mumbai/Chandigarh, October 24: Interesting political developments were taking place in Maharashtra and Haryana where votes were being counted for assembly elections results. In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena was reportedly flexing muscles for the chief ministerial post as its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seemed unlikely to claim a simple majority on its own. In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has demanded CM post for Aaditya Thackeray who contested from Worli assembly constituency. Aaditya is the first member of the Thackeray family who contested polls since Bal Thackeray founded the Shiv Sena in 1966. According to trends, the BJP was leading on around 100 of 288 assembly seats in the state. It means it cannot form a government on its own and will be needing Shiv Sena's support. In the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party winning 122 seats. The Shiv Sena, which contested alone, came second with 63 seats. The Congress and NCP bagged 42 and 41 seats respectively.
In Haryana, a tight contest was seen between the ruling BJP and Congress after three hours of counting. Anticipating a hung house, Dushyant Chautala said that his Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) will support anyone who will offer him the chief ministerial post. According to trends, the BJP and Congress have secured on 35 and 32 seats respectively. Dushyant Chautala's JJP was ahead in 11 constituencies. A party needs 46 seats to form government in 90-member Haryana assembly. Neither BJP, nor Congress has so far officially accepted Chautala's offer.
In the 2014 Haryana assembly election, the BJP won 47 seats in the 90 member assembly, the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) won 19 seats, the Congress won 15 seats while others won 9 seats.
