Results of the assembly elections assume significance as the electoral battle comes barely six months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi won a second mandate to rule the Centre. Results of Last Polls
The two states were won by the BJP in the last assembly elections held in 2014. Shortly after the Narendra Modi wave had gripped the nation five years ago, the Haryana assembly polls were won for the first-ever time by the saffron party. In the 90-member assembly, the BJP had succeeded in attaining a simple-majority, winning 47 constituencies.
In Maharashtra, the BJP and the Shiv Sena had broken their 25-year-old alliance ahead of the polls and contested separately. The two parties won 122 and 63 seats, respectively, and inked a post-poll pact to form the government. The then 15-year-old incumbent alliance of the Congress and the NCP was also split, with two parties being reduced to 42 and 41 seat, respectively.
