The general elections were held in four phases from April 11 to April 29 in Maharashtra. Before the state went to polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena buried their hatchet and announced to contest elections together. Of 48 seats, the BJP contested 25 seats, while the Shiv Sena fought from 23 constituencies. The Congress party joined hands with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to contest polls and brought several regional parties under one roof against the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.

As per the seat-sharing agreement, the Congress contested 24 seats, while the NCP fielded candidates on 20 seats. Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) got two seats, while Bahujan Vikas Aghadi and Yuva Swabhimani Paksha one each. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP, Shiv Sena and Swabhiman Paksha won 23, 18 and one seat respectively, bringing NDA tally to 42. The Congress party had bagged only two seats and NCP just four.
The exit polls released on Sunday predicted a thumping victory for the BJP-Shiv Sena combine in Maharashtra. According to the IANS-CVOTER exit poll, the ruling alliance is likely to win 34 seats. The Congress-NCP led coalition is projected to win 14 seats. The exit poll conducted by News19-IPSOS predicted 42-45 seats for the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance and 4-6 seats of the Congress-NCP combine.
