Maharashtra Congress President Balasaheb Thorat Meets NCP Chief Sharad Pawar in Baramati

The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance won an absolute majority in the Maharashtra assembly polls with the former emerging as the single largest party in the state with 105 seats. Shiv Sena, on the other hand, bagged 56 seats in the elections. However, no party managed to win the majority on its own.

Mumbai, October 26: Amid the BJP-Shiv Sena negotitations for forming the government in Maharashtra, president of Maharashtra Congress Committee Balasaheb Thorat met Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar in Baramati, today, on Saturday. Pawar's daughter and NCP MP Supriya Sule and NCP MLA Rohit Pawar (grand nephew of Sharad Pawar) were also present during the meeting. The meeting comes even as Shiv Sena announced that they had discussed a 50-50 formula with BJP. Under this condition for the alliance, Shiv Sena and BJP would govern the state for 2.5 years each. As per the details, Shiv Sena chief had asked a written assurance from BJP president Amit Shah, following which he would give his support to BJP to form government in Maharashtra. Balasaheb Thorat had said on Friday that they are willing to talk to the Shiv Sena if the latter approaches the Congress and NCP for talks. Maharashtra: NCP, Congress Deny Alliance With Shiv Sena for Govt Formation; Say 'Will Respect People's Mandate'.

Shiv Sena, on the other hand, bagged 56 seats in the elections. The NCP also increased its numbers as compared to the 2014 elections with 54 seats while the Congress slipped to the fourth position winning 44 seats.
