Mumbai, October 24: The results of Maharashtra assembly elections 2019 is scheduled to be declared today by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The outcome of the vidhan sabha polls assume significance as it comes within six months after the nation gave a second mandate to the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). All 288 constituencies of the state were contested in a single-phase on Monday. An overall voter turnout of 63 percent was recorded by the Election Commission. The contest was primarily between the ruling alliance of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Shiv Sena and the Opposition coalition of Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Parties such as the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) were also expected to play a crucial in a select-few constituencies.

The counting of votes was scheduled to begin at 8:00 am across all designated centres earmarked by the Election Commission across Maharashtra. The first trends were expected to emerge by 8:30 am. The final results will be declared by the ECI after the counting of votes concludes.

After the polls, the post-election surveys released on Monday evening had predicted the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance to retain power with a resounding mandate. An aggregate of all major exit polls claimed that the BJP-Shiv Sena combine would win over 200 seats.

In the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP and Shiv Sena had contested without a pre-poll alliance. The two parties had ended up  winning 122 and 63 constituencies, respectively. The Congress and the NCP, which broke their their alliance days before the elections, were reduced to 42 and 41 seats, respectively.
