Bhopal, Feb 27: The bye-election results of Madhya Pradesh's Kolaras and Mungaoli assembly seats will be declared today by the State Election Commission. The counting of votes was scheduled to begin at 8 am. The bypoll battle has turned into a prestige fight for the BJP and the Congress, with both the parties pitching in their state-level top rung leaders into the campaign trail. The bypolls in the two constituencies were necessitated following the deathof Congress legislators representing the seats. While Mungaoli MLA Mahendra Singh Kalukheda passed away in September last year, Kolaras MLA Ram Singh Yadav passed away in October 2017.
Mungaoli Bypoll
Mungaoli (in Ashoknagar district), along with Kolaras went to polls on February 24. The seat witnessed a voter turnout of 77.85 percent, slightly down from the 2013 assembly polls. The Congress had fielded Brajendra Singh Yadav from the seat, whereas, the BJP's candidate was Baisahab Yadav.
Kolaras Bypoll
The Congress has fielded Mahendra Singh Yadav, son of deceased legislator Ram Singh Yadav from Kolaras, whereas, the BJP candidate from the seat is Devendra Jain. In the bypoll held on Saturday, 72.82 per cent polling was recorded.
The bye-elections in Madhya Pradesh are the final round of electoral faceoff between the BJP and Congress, before the two parties move into assembly polls later this year.
