Bhopal, July 22: Fearing the spread of novel coronavirus infection through electronic voting machines (EVMs), former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and state Congress President Kamal Nath on Wednesday has written to Election Commission to India (ECI) suggesting the use of ballot papers for upcoming by-polls in the state for 24 assembly seats.
The by-elections for 24 state Assembly seats were necessitated following the resignation by 22 Indian National Congress MLAs and death of two other lawmakers. According to the rule, byelections are to be conducted within six months of the seat falling vacant. In this case, the deadline ends on September 10, 2020. Earlier, Congress leader JP Dhanopia had also demanded the use of ballot papers for by-polls in Madhya Pradesh.
The 24 vacant assembly seats are Jaura, Dimni, Ambah, Sumawali, Morena, Mehgaon, Gohad, Dabra, Gwalior, Gwalior East, Bhander, Karaira, Ashok Nagar, Mungawali, Surkhi, Ratkheda, Bamori, Byohari, Anuppur, Agar, Sanchi, Harpiplaya, Sanwer and Suwasara.
