Chennai, August 26: MK Stalin, the working president of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), filed his nomination for the post of party president on Sunday. DMK will have its general council on Tuesday. DMK party’s principal secretary Duraimurugan, filed nomination for the post of treasurer along with Stalin, said reports.

The general secretary of DMK had announced last week that the party's general council would be held on 28 August. The venue for the general council would be Anna Arivalayam, which is the party's headquarters.

The objective of the general council is to elect the party's president and treasurer after the death of M Karunanidhi. The party said that nominations could be filed till Sunday and that the assessment of the nominations would take place on Monday, before the elections take place on Tuesday.

Earlier, senior party leader A.Raja had said that Stalin would be elected as the party president unanimously after 65 district secretaries proposed Stalin's nomination.

Before filing his nomination on Sunday, Stalin visited and paid his respects at the memorials of the founder of DMK, CN Annadurai and M Karunanidhi. He then headed to the party headquarters to file his nomination.

M Karunanidhi, DMK chief and leading political figure, died on August 7, 2018 in Tamil Nadu. He had been undergoing treatment at Kauvery Hospital due to the decline in his health because of urinary tract infection and its complications. The 94-year-old politician, who has seen it all, was one of the founding members of the Dravidian Progressive Federation in 1949. He was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu several times, the first being in 1969-71, then in 1971-76, 1989-91, 1996-2001 and finally in 2006-2011.
