Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Rahul Gandhi to File Nomination From Wayanad on April 4, Priyanka Vadra to Accompany Him

Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor said Gandhi's candidature from Wayanad is aimed at boosting the party's prospects in three southern states.

New Delhi, April 2: Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who has announced Wayanad as the second seat he would be contesting from, would file the nomination papers on Thursday, April 4. He would be accompanied by his sister and Congress' Uttar Pradesh general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

The Gandhi scion's candidature from Wayanad has evoked a sharp reaction from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). While the latter has called his candidature as a blow to the prospects of Opposition unity, whereas, the saffron party has charged Rahul Gandhi of fleeing away Amethi fearing the wrath of "majority community". 'Congress Insulted Hindus, Now Running Scared': PM Modi Jabs Rahul Gandhi Over Wayanad Candidature

"The Congress insulted Hindus. People have decided to punish it in the election. Leaders of that party are now scared of contesting from constituencies dominated by majority (Hindu) population," the Prime Minister said while addressing a rally in Maharashtra's Wardha on Tuesday.

"Congress used the term 'Hindu terror'...it labelled peace-loving Hindus as terrorists...is there a single incident of Hindu terrorism? The people will never forgive the Congress for this insult," he further added.

Former CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said Gandhi has sent out a negative message while batting for Opposition unity on the other hand. "If his priority is to fight the Left in Kerala, than we will fight back and ensure his defeat from Wayanad," he said.
