New Delhi, January 6: A pre-poll survey conducted by a news channel on Saturday predicted a hung House if Lok Sabha elections are held now. According to the opinion poll results, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) might lose its majority in Lok Sabha, while the Congress is set to increase its tally in the lower house of Parliament.
The opinion poll said the NDA may get 257 seats and the Congress-led UPA (minus Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party) would bag 146 seats, far off the majority mark of 272 in the 543-seat Lok Sabha. The BJP alone is projected to win 199 seats, while the Congress 81. The NDA could get 37.15 per cent votes, UPA 29.92 per cent and 'others' 32.93 per cent, the survey predicted. NDA includes the ruling BJP, Shiv Sena, Akali Dal, JD(U), Mizo National Front, Apna Dal, Sikkim Democratic Front, LJP of Ramvilas Paswan, NPP of Meghalaya, INRC of Puducherry, PMK and NDPP of Nagaland. The survey, conducted in all 543 parliamentary seats, was done after the results of assembly polls in five states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where the Congress has formed governments. A survey from the same news channel in November had given NDA a clear majority with 281 seats, UPA 124, and 'others' 138.
The likely alliance of the SP and BSP is set to spell a major challenge for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. According to the opinion poll, the BJP's number will be reduced to 40 from 73. The SP and BSP together would bag 35 seats. The state has 80 Lok Sabha seats and the BJP and its allies bagged 73 in 2014 elections.
