Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got a clear mandate on the counting day and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's wave worked like charm in the country. Indian National Congress (INC) as their primary opposition managed to win on 51 Lok Sabha seats, a rise of seven seats from 44 in the last General Election. Contesting on 423 seats which is less in comparison to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s fielding 437 candidates is a first in their history. While they have been in the shadows of the Narendra Modi-led party for some time now, the results had an important bearing on the term of Rahul Gandhi as the Congress president. The exit polls had predicted a National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-led government at the Centre with Congress and its allies falling well short of the magical figure of 272. Most of the surveys had indicated UPA to get anything between 80 to 130 seats which dampens their prospect of forming the next central government. It is also interesting to note that in states where they are in power like Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh-the pollsters fared poorly. In a one on one contest with BJP which is being billed as their downfall.

In the last election, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had won 59 seats with the Congress claiming 44 on its own. Their performance was massive below par in comparison to the 206 the UPA had in the 2009 General Elections. Their vote share in the 2014 Election took a plunge by 9% to fall to 19.52 % - a direct result of the popularity of Narendra Modi. The key Congress members fighting polls this term are Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Milind Deora and new faces like actress Urmila Matondkar who is contesting from Mumbai North.
