The exit polls had predicted a National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-led government at the Centre with Congress and its allies falling well short of the magical figure of 272. Most of the surveys had indicated UPA to get anything between 80 to 130 seats which dampens their prospect of forming the next central government. It is also interesting to note that in states where they are in power like Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh-the pollsters fared poorly. In the last election, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had won 59 seats with the Congress claiming 44 on its own. Their performance was massive below par in comparison to the 206 the UPA had in the 2009 General Elections. Their vote share in the 2014 Election took a plunge by 9% to fall to 19.52 % - a direct result of the popularity of Narendra Modi. The key Congress members fighting polls this term are Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Milind Deora and new faces like actress Urmila Matondkar who is contesting from Mumbai North.
