Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Congress to Contest 9 Seats in Alliance With DMK in Tamil Nadu, Says MK Stalin

Chennai, February 20: A day after the AIADMK and BJP announced their alliance in Tamil Nadu before the Lok Sabha elections, DMK president MK Stalin on Thursday announced their coalition with Congress in the state and declared that Congress would contest in nine constituencies in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry.

Announcing the decision of the party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief, while briefing the press conference, said, "Out of total 40 seats, 9 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu & 1 seat in Puducherry have been given to Congress." Lok Sabha Elections 2019: AIADMK, BJP Join Hands in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry; DMK-Congress Alliance Talks in Final Stages. 

Earlier on Wednesday, senior Congress leaders met DMK chief and other prominent leaders for the seat-sharing arrangements ahead of the polls. Even Congress president Rahul Gandhi met top leaders from Tamil Nadu, including state Congress president K S Alagiri and his predecessor S Thirunavukkarasar.

During the hour-long meeting with the DMK leaders, former Union finance minister P Chidambaram engaged in the consultations and met DMK leader and Rajya Sabha member M Kanimozhi. The latter also met Gandhi.

It was speculated earlier that Congress is betting for ten seats, the same number of seats it had contested in 2004 Lok Sabha elections as part of the DMK-led alliance. In 2014, the Congress and DMK contested had separately.
