New Delhi, April 9: Campaign for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections 2019 ended on Monday, as less than two days remain now for the commencement of polls. In the voting to be held on April 11, a total of 91 parliamentary seats, across 20 states would be contested. In addition, assembly polls in four states - Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim - would also commence on Thursday.
Pollsters claim that the first phase of the high-stake general elections will hold the key as the party or coalition which gains the upper hand will have a psychological advantage moving into the forthcoming polling phases. Western Uttar Pradesh is another key area of the electoral battle, as 8 seats from the region, including three being currently represented by incumbent Union Ministers - General V K Singh, Mahesh Sharma and Satyapal Singh - will be contested. The phase would also put to test Ajit Singh's RLD, one of the constituents of UP's Mahagathbandhan.
From today onwards, the news channels and media outlets have been barred from broadcasting opinion polls, as they could influence the voting pattern in the upcoming phases of the elections.
Among other states, 2 parliamentary constituencies from Arunachal Pradesh, 4 from Bihar, 5 from Assam, 2 from Jammu & Kashmir, 7 from Maharashtra, 17 from Telangana, 4 from Odisha, 2 from Meghalaya, 2 from West Bengal and 1 each from Triputa, Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur, Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar would be contested.
