The biggest shocker has emerged from Uttar Pradesh's Amethi, where sitting MP and Congress president Rahul Gandhi was trailing to BJP challenger and Union Minister Smriti Irani.

The maximum lead for the BJP has come from the Hindi heartland, where it has nearly repearedits performance of 2014. In Uttar Pradesh, despite the alliance between Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, the saffron camp has succeeded in retaining at least 55 constituencies.

Another shot in the arm for the BJP came from West Bengal, where the party has scripted its best-ever electoral performance. As per the trends so far, it was likely to win 16 constituencies, whereas, the Trinamool Congress' tally has dropped to 25 seats.

Nearly 20,000 BJP workers have gathered outside the party headquarters in Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to arrive at 5pm. A grand celebration is likely on cards, with jubilant party cadres across the celebrations embarking on victory rallies and processions.
