New Delhi, May 23: The Lok Sabha election results 2019 is expected to be out today, with the Election Commission of India scheduled to begin the counting of votes at 8:00 am. Ahead of the results, the exit poll predictions threw a spanner in the Opposition's bid to dislodge Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An aggregate of all major post-poll surveys have predicted the BJP-led NDA to cross the 300-mark.

The seven-round electoral battle began on April 11, when the first round of polls were held. Hectic electioneering has been witnessed across the nation, featuring rallies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. This elections also witnessed the much-awaited political debut of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who was assigned as the Congress' general secretary in-charge of eastern UP.

Regional players and non-aligned also played a key role in this elections, with battle in several states appearing to be vexed in their corner. Among them are Telangana's K Chandrasekhar Rao, Andhra Pradesh's Jaganmohan Reddy, Odisha's Naveen Patnaik, along with Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav in Uttar Pradesh.

The Modi-Shah-led BJP is firm on returning to power with a full-majority, whereas, the Opposition has vowed to replace the incumbent Prime Minister. "We will return to power with over 300 seats," said Shah on the final day of campaigning, while Rahul Gandhi "promised" reporters that the BJP government won't last after May 23.

In 2014, the then UPA regime led by Manmohan Singh was wiped out from power by a resurgent BJP. The latter had alone won 282 seats, whereas, the overall NDA tally stood at 334. The Congress was reduced to 44 constituencies, which was its electorally weakest position since the independence of India.
