New Delhi, April 26: The Election Commission on Thursday announced the dates for the bye-elections to the four parliamentary constituencies - two in Maharashtra, one in Nagaland and one in Uttar Pradesh. The bypolls for the Lok Sabha seats will be held on May 28. The results are scheduled to be declared on May 31.
Out of the four seats, three were held by the BJP, whereas, one was represented by its ally - the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party.
Lok Sabha Bypolls: Which seats are being contested?
- In Maharashtra, the seats of Palghar (ST) and Bhandara-Gondiya will be up for grabs. The by-elections were necessitated following the deaths of the incumbent BJP lawmakers.
- In Uttar Pradesh, the seat of Kairana will be contested. The constituency was earlier held by BJP veteran Hukum Singh, who passed away earlier this year.
- In Nagaland, the sole Lok Sabha seat was represented by Neiphiu Rio, who was had to vacate the seat earlier in the year after being elected as the Chief Minister of the state.
The bypolls come in the backdrop of a series of setbacks faced by the BJP various bye-elections to the parliamentary constituencies. The most politically significant loss incurred by the BJP was in Phulpur and Gorakhpur last month. The seats were last represented by UP's incumbent Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya and CM Yogi Adityanath, respectively. The defeat also brought the BJP's tally down to 272 in the Lok Sabha.
