The main contest in the election was between Mahagathbandhan comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). The Congress and Left Parties, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United (JDU) is also part of the NDA. The Bihar Assembly elections 2020 is the first major polling exercise since the outbreak of COVID-19 in India. The BJP contested 243-seat assembly elections in alliance with JDU as part of 50:50 seat division formula. The saffron party contested on 121 seats, while the JDU fielded its candidates on 122 seats.
The Congress, a part of the Mahagathbandhan alliance in Bihar, contested on 70 out of the 243 seats. As per the seat-sharing pact finalised, the RJD fielded its candidates on 144 constituencies. Remaining 29 seats were given to Left parties - CPI, CPI(M) and CPI-ML.
According to an opinion poll conducted by the ABP-CVoter, NDA will get the majority in Bihar. he ABP-CVoter projected a 135-159 seat-win for the NDA, while Mahagathbandhan is likely to bag 77-98 seats. Tejashwi Yadav being the CM face of the Mahagathbandhan. Meanwhile, Lok Janshakti Party, BJP's alliance partner at the Centre contested the elections alone.
