Ranchi, April 9: With Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav appealing for bail on health grounds ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2019, the CBI told the Supreme Court on Tuesday it should be denied as the leader has been not sentenced to 3.5 years but 27.5 years in jail if all punishments are calculated cumulatively.
Opposing the bail, the Cbi in its affidavit - filed on Tuesday - stated, "Lalu Yadav is not sentenced to 3.5 years but 27.5 years in jail if all punishments are calculated cumulatively." It is to be known that Lalu Yadav had requested bail for the Lok Sabha elections, but CBI opined that the political leader was 'misleading the court by asking for bail on medical grounds'. The central probing agency also claimed the former Bihar chief minister 'is conducting political activities from a special ward of a hospital', reports the Hindustan Times.
Convicted in 2017 for a multi-million-rupee scam involving the embezzlement of government funds meant for cattle fodder in the 1990s when he was chief minister of undivided Bihar, Lalu has been at a hospital in Ranchi for much of his sentence so far.
As the Supreme Court would hear Lalu's bail plea on Wednesday, stakes are high for the RJD ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Though Lalu's absences is a setback for the RJD, his younger son Tejashwi has proven his merit to lead the party from the front.
