Ladakh, August 18: Sonam Wangmo, JNU alumnus wife of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, defended former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union President Kanhaiya Kumar. Speaking to a news channel, Sonam Wangmo said Kanhaiya Kumar was not present at the JNU campus when "anti-national" slogans were allegedly raised.

On February 9, 2016, "anti-national" slogans were allegedly raised at the JNU campus during a programme called to protest against the death sentence handed out to Afzal Guru, a convict in the 2002 Parliament attack. Following the incident, Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid were charged with sedition. However, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal's wife said Kanhaiya Kumar was falsely implicated. Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, BJP MP, Says 'Thanks to Modi Ji, Ladakh Is Being Discussed at UN'.

"The video and audio were fake. It happened in front of my hostel. We know Kanhaiya was not at the event. He got arrested just because he was a student leader," Sonam Wangmo, who is a former student of JNU, told the news channel. Namgyal was sitting next to her when she made the statement. Jamyang Tsering Namgyal Dances With Locals During 73rd Independence Day Celebrations.

Ladakh BJP MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal's Wife Defends Kanhaiya Kumar:

The Delhi Police named 10 JNU students, including Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and seven Kashmiris, as the main accused in the case. Sonam Wangmo's statement assumes significance as several Bharatiya Janata Party leaders have often described Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Khalid as members of "tukde tukde gang".

Jamyang Tsering Namgyal shot to fame with his powerful speech in Parliament supporting the revocation of special status for Jammu and Kashmir and creation of separate union territory of Ladakh.
