During his address in Meghalaya’s Phulbari district, the Prime Minister said that his government plans to spend around Rs 180 crore for building of new Shillong airport.
Phulbari, February 22: Just five days before the Assembly elections are scheduled in Nagaland and Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday visited both the poll-bound states to address election rallies. During his address in Meghalaya’s Phulbari district, the Prime Minister said that his government plans to spend around Rs 180 crore for building of new Shillong airport which will improve the possibilities of industrial development besides generation of employment for the common man.
“Under PMGSY, we provided around Rs 470 crore for construction of 1100 KM of road. However, Meghalaya government was unable to spend 50% of the work”, the Prime Minister said. The Assembly elections in both the states will be held on February 27, 2018. It must be noted that the West Garo Hills district is considered as the Congress bastion since statehood in 1972.

- The ruling government is recognized for scam in the recruitment of teachers. The Prime Minister said the his government will ensure more and more tourists arrive here. This will generate income opportunities for people.
- The Prime Minister said, "Meghalaya needs double engine - one from Meghalaya, another from Delhi. If both the engines come to work together, all the work which had been halted for 50 years will begin at once".
- The Prime Minister slammed the ruling government in the state and said, "The current government has wasted your 50 years. I urge you to provide us with one opportunity for five years".
- We want to further strengthen the 'Act East Policy.' This will open up opportunities for people in the state and in the entire Northeast: pm Modi
- Meghalaya has immense potential for the growth of tourism sector but the state lacks tourists. No efforts were made ever to strengthen the sector: PM
- Lauding about efforts taken by his government, the Prime Minister said, “We approved construction of 21,000 houses in Meghalaya and provided more than Rs 100 crore to the government. But they were unable to build the required number of houses”.
- “Though the current CM is a doctor himself, the healthcare sector is in bad shape. Women are forced to deliver babies at home which poses a great threat to the lives of mother and baby”, PM Modi said.
- The Prime Minister said, “We have introduced Ayushman Bharat scheme which entitles a family to claim 5 lakh per year towards medical exigencies”.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister addressed an election rally in Tuensang district of Nagaland- which is about 360 km from capital Kohima. It must be noted that there are six assembly seats in Tuensang district in the eastern part of Nagaland. BJP has fielded candidates on four seats while its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) nominees are in the fray on the rest two constituencies. During his address, the Prime Minister said his vision for the Northeast is transformation by transportation.
To recall, PM Modi visited Tripura on February 18. On February 15, PM Modi was addressing a public rally in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh where he said that the UPA government neglected Northeast states.
