Phulbari, February 22: Just five days before the Assembly elections are scheduled in Nagaland and Meghalaya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday visited both the poll-bound states to address election rallies. During his address in Meghalaya’s Phulbari district, the Prime Minister said that his government plans to spend around Rs 180 crore for building of new Shillong airport which will improve the possibilities of industrial development besides generation of employment for the common man.

“Under PMGSY, we provided around Rs 470 crore for construction of 1100 KM of road. However, Meghalaya government was unable to spend 50% of the work”, the Prime Minister said. The Assembly elections in both the states will be held on February 27, 2018. It must be noted that the West Garo Hills district is considered as the Congress bastion since statehood in 1972.

Here are the key highlights of Narendra Modi's Rally address in Meghalaya:

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister addressed an election rally in Tuensang district of Nagaland- which is about 360 km from capital Kohima. It must be noted that there are six assembly seats in Tuensang district in the eastern part of Nagaland. BJP has fielded candidates on four seats while its ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) nominees are in the fray on the rest two constituencies. During his address, the Prime Minister said his vision for the Northeast is transformation by transportation.

To recall, PM Modi visited Tripura on February 18. On February 15, PM Modi was addressing a public rally in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh where he said that the UPA government neglected Northeast states.

In Meghalaya, Verified Voter’s Paper Trail (VVPATs) will be used in the assembly elections for the first time.  The BJP has fielded candidates on 47 seats out of a total of 60 in Meghalaya.
