New Delhi, December 20: Following the footsteps of West Bengal, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday announced that his state government has stayed all the activities connected with the updation regarding National Population Register. With this, Kerala has become the second state to stay all activities associated with updation of the NPR.

Announcing the order of the state government, state General Administration Department Secretary KR Jyothilal wrote, as IANS quotes "Considering that the apprehensions among the general public about the conduct of NPR related activities lead to National Register of Citizens in the wake of the CAA, the State government orders to stay all the activities connected with the updation of the NPR in the state forthwith." It is to be known that, Vijayan had categorically stated that his governemnt would not implement the Citizesnship Amendment Act in Kerala, nor would allow National Register of Citizens to see the light of day. He is the second Chief Minister after Mamata Banerjee who had made it clear that CAA will not be implemented in his state.

Earlier on Monday, Banerjee issued an order to stay the preparation/updation of the National Population Register (NPR) process in West Bengal. The directive has been issued to the census cell, in which it has been stated that no census activities will be taken up without clearance from the West Bengal state.

According to the NPR, the document all the usual residents -- regarding citizenship and others -- are prepared at the local, sub-District, District, State and National level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955. A person residing the area for the past 6 months or more, or intends to do the same has to mandatorily register in the NPR.
