Results of the Lok Sabha election in Katihar, along with other parliamentary seats, has been declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Dulal Chandra Goswami of JD(U) has been named the winner. The seat, featuring the candidature of sitting MP and NCP-turned-Congress leader Tariq Anwar, went to polls on April 18. Notification for the 97 seats going to polls in the second phase, which includes Katihar, was released by the ECI on March 20. Aspirants were asked to file their candidatures by March 26 -- the last date for filing the nominations. The Mahagathbandhan candidate from the seat is Tariq Anwar, who would be contesting on the Congress ticket. The NDA has fielded Dulal Chand Goswami of the JD(U).
In the 2014 general elections, the Katihar constituency was won by Anwar, on the NCP ticket, with a margin of nearly 1.25 lakh votes over his nearest BJP rival Nikhil Kumar Choudhary. The seat was won by him on earlier occasions as well: 1998, 1996 and 1984 -- on the Congress symbol.
