Karnataka Political Crisis: Speaker Moves Supreme Court Seeking More Time To Decide On Rebel MLAs' Resignations

Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking more time to deal with the resignation issue of rebel MLAs. The apex court will hear the matter on Friday. the top court directed 10 rebel Congress-JDS MLAs to meet the Speaker at 6 pm today and submit their resignations again.

New Delhi, July 11: Karnataka Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking more time to deal with the resignation issue of rebel MLAs. However, the top Court refused an urgent hearing in the matter.  The apex court will hear the matter on Friday. The Supreme Court said, "In the morning we have fixed the matter for hearing tomorrow'. Meanwhile, the top court directed 10 rebel legislators of the Congress-Janata Dal-Secular (JDS) alliance to meet the state assembly speaker at 6 pm today and submit their resignations again. The court asked Kumar to take his decision over the resignations in the remaining part of the day today and also ordered the DGP of the state to provide protection to all the rebel MLAs. The political crisis in Karnataka deepens, as the strength of the alliance in the Karnataka Assembly dropped to 103 members as two more MLAs resigned on Wednesday. Yesterday, Karnataka Congress leader and minister DK Shivakumar was not allowed to meet rebel MLAs and kept waiting outside the hotel in Mumbai where rebel MLAs are staying. Shivakumar called it a dark day in the Indian democracy.
