Gulbarga, along with other districts of Karnataka, went to polls on May 12. The region, part of the Kalaburagi division, witnessed a triangular poll fight between the Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) and the BJP. Noteworthy, the KJP which had won one assembly seat from the district had merged with the BJP. The party was founded in 2012 by BS Yeddyurappa, who made his way back to the saffron party in 2014. A year ahead of the recently conducted assembly polls, he was announced as the BJP's prospective chief minister.
Key facts to know about Gulbarga district: The region houses a population of 25.6 lakh people. The administrative headquarters are located in the city of Gulbarga, where nearly 5.37 lakh people reside as per the 2011 survey. The total area encompassed by the district is 10,951 square kilometres.
