Karnataka Elections: EC Defers Polling in RR Nagar Seat; Voting to be Held on May 28, Results on May 31
In a late night raid conducted by EC officials at a flat in RR Nagar constituency on Tuesday, over 9,000 voter ID cards were seized, along with two steel trunks full of fake voter ID slips.
New Delhi, May 11: The Election Commission on Friday announced the deferment of polls in Karnataka's Rajarajeshwari (RR) Nagar constituency. As per the notification issued, the voting has been rescheduled in the assembly segment on May 28. The results would be declared on May 31.
The Commission's decision of deferring the polls comes in the wake of the demand raised by the BJP and Janata Dal (Secular), accusing the Congress of attempting to rig the polls using "fake voter ID cards".
In a late night raid conducted by EC officials at a flat in RR Nagar constituency on Tuesday, over 9,000 voter ID cards were seized, along with two steel trunks full of fake voter ID slips.
A day later, a BJP delegation comprising of Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar, Sadananda Gowda, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and JP Nadda met the State Electoral Officer, demanding the deferment of the polls to a later date.
The Congress, meanwhile, accused the BJP of staging a drama. "The house where the fake voter IDs were seized belonged to a former BJP corporator, . She had rented the house to her own son. Why is the BJP blaming us," said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala.
The BJP, however, said it has no links with Nanjamuri, the owner of the house, who last had represented the BJP in the local civic body in 2002. "The BJP has no relation with her since the past 15 years," said party spokesperson Sambit Patra.
While the polls in RR Nagar have been deferred, the election as per schedule will be held in 222 of the 224 constituencies. Apart from RR Nagar, voting will also not be held in Jayanagar as the incumbent MLA and BJP candidate BN Vijayakumar died of heart attack on May 4.
