New Delhi, May 6: Election watchdog group, the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR), on Sunday released its report on the candidates who have entered the fray for the upcoming Karnataka assembly polls.

As per the ADR assessment, 37 per cent (or 83 of the 224) BJP candidates have criminal cases registered against them, as compared to 27 per cent (or 59 of the 220) Congress candidates.

The Janata Dal (Secular) has fared comparatively better, with 19 per cent (or 41 of the 199) candidates with declared criminal cases.

Meanwhile, 5 of the 27 candidates of the debutant Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also have cases registered against them. Among the independent contestants, 1090 were found to be booked under various charges.

A total of 254 candidates, cutting across party lines, have declared serious criminal charges levelled against them. "Four candidates have declared case related to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-302), 25 candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (Indian Penal Code Section-307)," said the report, adding that "23 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women".

Red Alert Constituencies:

56 assembly segments have been categorised by the ADR as "red alert constituencies". This refer to those seats where three or more candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Crorepati Candidates:

Of the 2,560 candidates contesting, nearly one-third or 883 have declared assets amounting above Rs 1 crore.

Among the major parties, 93 per cent (or 208 of the 224) BJP candidates are crorepatis, whereas, 94 per cent (or 207 of the 220) Congress candidates have assets valuing above Rs 1 crore.

From the JD(S), 77 per cent (or 154 of the 199) candidates are crorepatis.

Party-wise Asset Average:

The average asset of BJP candidates in the dray amounts to Rs 17.86 crore, whereas, the average asset value of Congress nominees was found to be Rs 38.75 crore. An analysis of the JD(S) candidates, found their average asset valuing Rs 20.91 crore.Meanwhile, the average asset of the 1,090 independent candidates amount to Rs 1.58 crore.
