Karnataka Bypolls 2019 Live News Updates: 66.25% Voter Turnout Recorded Till 6 PM in All 15 Assembly Constituencies

The Election Commission said that till 6 PM, a voter turnout of 66.25 per cent was recorded in the 15 Assembly constituencies in Karnataka in the third round of polling.
The Election Commission said that till 5.24 PM, a voter turnout of 60 per cent was recorded in the 15 Assembly constituencies in Karnataka in the third round of polling. the highest turnout of 79.8 per cent was recorded in Chikkaballapura, and the lowest at KR Puram in Bengaluru at 37.5 per cent.

The Election Commission said that till 1 PM, a voter turnout of 31.02 per cent was recorded in the 15 Assembly constituencies in Karnataka in the third round of polling.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had urged voters to come out in large numbers and vote. The Chief Minister said there can be meaning to democracy only if 80-85 per cent voters come out to vote. Polling is currently underway in 15 constituencies across the state. The places where bypolls are being held today include Athani, Kagwad, Gokak, Yellapur, Hirekerur, Ranibennur, Vijayanagar, Chikballapur, KR Puram, Yeshwanthpur, Mahalakshmi Layout, Shivajinagar, Hoskote, KR Pet and Hunsur.Ā
According to reports, a total of 37,77,970 electors are eligible to cast their votes at 4,185 polling stations in fifteen constituencies across the state. The eligible voters in Karnataka for bypolls comprise of 19,25,529 men, 18,52,027 women and 414 others. There are a total of 79,714 are young voters.
The BJP needs to win at least six seats to retain its majority in the 225-member assembly. The BJP currently has 105 MLAs (including an independent) while the Congress and the Janata Dal Secular have 66 and 34 respectively.
According to reports, the polling were scheduled for October 21, but theĀ EC had deferred it to December 5 after the Supreme Court decided to hear the petitions of the disqualified MLAs.
In the wake of the crucial bypolls in the state, the Election Commission and police have made elaborate arrangements for the smooth conduct of the elections in all the 15 constituencies. According to reports, out of total 42,509 personnel deployed for election management, 19,299 are polling personnel. As many as 11,241 personnel from state police and 2,511 Central Armed Police.

TheĀ by-polls are believed to be very crucial for three major parties in the state- the BJP, Congress and JD(S). The BJP and Congress has fielded candidates in each of 15 seats. Moreover, there are over 100 independents also contesting in these by-polls. In Karnataka, theĀ BS Yediyurappa government has 105 MLAs in the 207-member Assembly in the state.Ā The actual strength of the House is 224 members. TheĀ Congress-JD(S) coalition government led by former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had collapsed after 17 of its MLAs resigned. The resignations also reduced the majority mark in 224-strong Assembly to 104.Ā These MLAs were then disqualified by Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar, necessitating the bypolls. TheĀ BJP with its 105 MLAs formed the government in the state. Now with by-polls on these vacant seats, the majority mark would increase.
