Congress Wins Anekal, BJP Bags Yelahanka, JD (S) Takes Dasarahalli Among Other Constituencies in Bengaluru Urban District

Polling was held in Bengaluru Urban District of Karnataka for Assembly Elections 2018 along with other districts on May 12. The Election Commission of India declared the assembly results today. Constituencies in Bengaluru Urban district includes Anekal, Bangalore South, Byatarayanapura, Dasarahalli, Mahadevapura (SC), Yelahanka and Yeshwanthapura of which Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged three each. Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) managed to retain one seat.

However, in the 2013 assembly elections, among the seven constituencies, three were won by the Congress and the rest by BJP. The Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018 was seen as a major power contest between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the ruling Congress and JD (S). Watch streaming of the election results. While Bengaluru Urban district, the silicon valley of India has over 80 lakh voters, the region has have been witnessing the lowest voter turnout in the last assembly elections. This year, the district had 51 percent voter turnout, which is a slight dip from last year.

In 2013 Karnataka assembly elections, Bengaluru Urban district was among nine of the 10 constituencies with the lowest turnout. Interestingly, Bengaluru has voted for and brought to power the same leader in 20 of the 28 Assembly constituencies in the last two elections.

In a major breach of the electoral process, illegal entries were made to the voters’ list in Bengaluru, increasing the number by at least 7,000 across four constituencies. Four people were arrested in this connection.

Karnataka has over 5.06-crore electorate including 2.56 crore men, 2.5 crore women and over 5,000 in third gender category.  For the single-phase polling in 30 districts, 56,008 polling stations were set up of which 600 were marked as pink booths to attract female voters.
