Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018: Sonia Gandhi Address Rally in Bijapur After Two Years; Alleges PM Narendra Modi For Spreading Intolerance

Bijapur, May 8: United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi finally joined Congress’ campaign trail in Karnataka. Gandhi addressed her first election rally in nearly two years. She criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies during her rally in Bijapur.

She launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She said, “Wherever Modi-ji goes he says wrong things and distorts historical facts. He uses the names of heroes from our history for his political motives," The former Congress president also alleged the prime minister for spreading intolerance in Karnataka during his election campaign.

During her rally, Gandhi took a jibe at BJP’s slogan for 2014 elections. She said, “Is this your ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’?” The Congress president also questions BJP government’s intention to help farmers of the state. Gandhi said, “Modi ji has insulted the farmers and people of Karnataka. The Modi government has done the least for the state.”

Sonia Gandhi also alleged PM Modi for making hollow promises. Gandhi even said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had mocked UPA government’s initiative to bring MNREGA scheme. Hailing Siddaramaiah government for starting Indira canteens in the state.  She said, “Food is the right of every poor person.”

The 71-year-old UPA chairperson has not been well for some time. She was taken ill midway during the rally in Varanasi ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. She was then to be admitted at a Delhi hospital. The polling for Karnataka elections will take place on Saturday, and the results will be declared on May 15.
