Kannur Lok Sabha Constituency in Kerala Results 2019: Congress Candidate K Sudhakaran Elected MP

Kannur is one of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Indian state of Kerala.

The results of the Kannur Lok Sabha Constituency has been declared. Congress candidate K Sudhakaran won the seat with 4,98,493 votes. Sudhakaran won by a margin of 94,559 votes defeating sitting MP, PK Sreemathy of the Communist Party Of India (Marxist). Other candidates in the fray included Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP), CK Padmanabhan. Voting took place for the Kannur Constituency during the third phase. Kannur is one of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala. Located in northern Kerala, it is one of the 14 districts along the west coast of the state with district administrative headquarters in the town itself. Kannur which was earlier known as Cannanore constituency, was formed as a Lok Sabha constituency in 1977. Kannur Lok Sabha constituency comprises of seven assembly segments including Taliparamba, Irikkur, Azhikode, Kannur, Dharmadam, Mattannur and Peravoor. Kannur's constituency number is 2.

Though Kannur is known as a strong CPI(M) fortress, United Democratic Front (UDF) has won from the seat more times than the LDF. Congress-led UDF fielded working president Sudhakaran, a party strongman and former MP in the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2014 general elections, CPM's PK Sreemathi Teacher had won over Congress' K Sudhakaran with a small margin of 6,566 votes. The Lok Sabha elections 2019 was held between April 11 and May 19 in seven phases. In Kerala, voting was held in a single phase. During the third phase, the polling was held in 115 Lok Sabha constituencies of 14 states. The counting of votes was held on May 23 and thereafter the results were declared.
