Kamal Nath Meets Sonia Gandhi in Delhi Amid Infighting in Madhya Pradesh Congress

The meeting between Nath and Gandhi comes at a time when the Congress in Madhya Pradesh is looking at an organizational reshuffle. Nath, who was appointed as the state unit chief in April 2018, has made it quite obvious that his successor could be appointed soon, senior party leaders said.

Bhopal, August 30: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Friday met Congress President Sonia Gandhi in Delhi and held discussion over several issues including party organisation in the state. Nath termed the meeting as fruitful and said that he held a wide range of discussion with the Congress Chief. "I met Sonia Gandhi ji today & we discussed various subjects, including party organisation in the state. On the other hand, Congress leader Ashok Dangi from Datia, Madhya Pradesh on Friday issued a press note saying that if Jyotiraditya Scindia is kept away from state politics then he (Dangi) along with 500 people will resign from the party. The meeting between Nath and Gandhi comes at a time when the Congress in Madhya Pradesh is looking at an organizational reshuffle. Several senior leaders of the state unit of the party were inducted into the Kamal Nath cabinet recently. It is a challenge for the Congress president to look for a candidate for the position of state party chief, after Kamal Nath.

In Madhya Pradesh, the grand old party-Congress, came to power in December 2018 after 15 years. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which ruled the state for 15 years, was ruled by Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Chouhan was the state's longest serving chief minister since taking charge in 2005.

After winning majority, the Congress named veteran leader Kamal Nath as Madhya Pradesh's next chief minister. The Congress has secured support of a total of 121 MLAs, including SP (1) and BSP (2) legislators as also of four independents, to cross the majority mark of 116 seats in the 230-member assembly.
