Mumbai, March 23: Kalyan Lok Sabha seat witnessed a direct electoral contest between the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). In Kalyan parliamentary constituency, polling was held on April 29 in the fourth phase of general elections. Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde, who is the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), won from Kalyan constituency.

In Kalyan, the Shiv Sena renominated Shrikant Shinde in its bid to retain the parliamentary seat. The NCP fielded Babaji B Patil against Shinde. The process of filing nomination for Kalyan Lok Sabha election began from April 2. The last day for nominations was April 9. The Shiv Sena has formed an allaince with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the NCP has a tie-up with the Congress. The BJP and Shiv Sena are contesting 25 and 23 seats respectively of the total 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra. Of the 48 seats, the BJP-Shiv Sena combine bagged 41 in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. The Congress won only two seats and NCP just four. Lok Sabha elections will take place in seven phases - on April 11, April 18, April 23, April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19.
