RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan wrested the Lok Sabha seat from BJP with a margin of over 55,000 votes. The losing candidate, BJP's Mriganka Singh, conceded defeat saying the party needs to "re-plan" its strategy to take on the united Opposition.

Reacting to their victory, the RLD said "ganna" (sugarcane) has won over Jinnah -- referring to the recent controversy stoked in western UP's Aligarh, where BJP leaders demanded the removal of Muhammad Ali Jinnah's portrait from the Aligarh Muslim University.

"The voters in Kairana have rejected BJP's brazen attempt to polarise the elections. This is a victory of farmers who have marked their angst against the Modi and Yogi governments for failing to pay their sugarcane dues," said RLD MP Jayant Sinha.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who backed RLD in the Kairana bypoll, said, "This is a victory of Chaudhary Charan Singh's legacy."

Kairana, May 30: Of the 14 seats which went to bypolls on Monday, the result in Kairana is considered to be the most politically significant. Located in western Uttar Pradesh, the communally-sensitive Lok Sabha seat witnessed a high-octane electoral fight between the BJP and a united Opposition, comprising of the Samajwadi Party, BSP, RLD and Congress. The by-election results will be declared today. Stay tuned here for the live news and updates.

The voter turnout on May 28 was unimpressive, with only 54 per cent polling recorded -- nearly 18 per cent less than 2014. The voting was marred by wide-scale technical snags, as the electronic voting machines (EVM) malfunctioned in over 200 polling booths.

Re-election was held yesterday in 73 polling booths of Kairana, where the voting was suspended for more than two hours on Monday.

Marking their dissent on the EVM glitches, senior SP leader Ram Gopal Verma and RLD chief Ajit Singh led a delegation to meet the Election Commission officials and handed over an official complaint.

RLD candidate in the fray, Tabassum Hasan, had cried conspiracy, alleging the "faulty EVMs" were deliberately installed in Muslim and Dalit dominated segments. "First of all, the election was held in Ramzan to deter the Muslim voters. To further discourage polling, dysfunctional EVMs have been installed in segments when they form  a majority," she had said.

Kairana By-Election 2018: Factsheet

Last winner: In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Kairana seat was wrested by BJP veteran Hukum Singh, with a margin of over 2,30,000 votes. His nearest rival was SP's Nahid Hasan.

Reason for bypoll: Hukum Singh's death earlier this year necessitated by-election. The 79-year-old lawmaker passed on February 3, 2018 at Noida's JP Hospital where he was admitted for over a month due to respiratory issues.

Candidates in Fray: The BJP had fielded Hukum Singh's daughter Mriganka Singh for the bypoll, whereas, Samajwadi Party leader Tabassum Hasan contested the seat on RLD ticket. Her candidature was backed by the Congress and BSP as well.

All eyes are fixed on the Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll results as it would gauge the electoral mood of UP ahead of the crucial general elections next year. In 2014, Uttar Pradesh had powered BJP to a full majority victory as the party had won 71 of the 80 parliamentary constituencies in the state.
