Srinagar, August 7: Despite the special status of Jammu & Kashmir being revoked through the dilution of Article 370, the state's "separate flag" continued to wave atop the Srinagar civil secretariat along with the tricolour. Visuals released on social media showed the state flag being waved, despite J&K's "complete integration" into India.

Notably, Kashmir, under Article 370, had its own separate constitution and flag -- which reflected the distinct identity of the state. The same were keenly negotiated by the Kashmiri side while inking the Treaty of Accession with India. Not only has J&K's special status been revoked, the region is no longer a state and has been converted into a union territory.

The move, Home Minister Amit Shah said in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, will end the 70 years of injustice imposed against the people of India, including the civilians of J&K.

The Congress, whose lawmakers opposed the law in the Parliament, has called Article 370's abrogation an assault on the historic Treaty of Ascension, which linked J&K to India in 1948.

Article 370 was conceived and crafted by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, assisted by N. Gopalaswamy Iyengar and V.P. Menon.

"What the BJP government accomplished yesterday in the Rajya Sabha and today in the Lok Sabha has grave implications going well beyond J&K and calls into question the very idea of India being a Union of States. Jammu & Kashmir acceded to India as one State and no government has the power to change its status or divide it or reduce any part of it to a Union Territory," said the statement issued by Congress Working Committee on Tuesday.
