New Delhi, June 24: Raising the case of horrific lynching of 22-year-old Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad asked why Prime Minister Narendra Modi is still mute despite advocating 'sabka saath, sabka vishwas'. The Congress veteran alleged that Muslims and Dalits are being constantly targeted in the BJP-ruled state.
"Jharkhand has become a factory of lynching and violence. Dalits and Muslims are killed there every week. PM, we are with you in the fight of 'sabka saath sabka vikas' but it should be there for people to see it. We can't see it anywhere," Azad said. Jharkhand Lynching Case: Muslim Man Dies After Mob Thrashes Him for 18 Hours
Ansari was attacked by a mob in Kharsawan district on June 18, after he was apprehended by them following an alleged theft attempt in the wee hours of the day. While two men along with Ansari escaped from the spot, he was caught, tied up to a pole and thrashed for several hours.
Ansari was made to chant "Jai Shree Ram" and "Jai Hanuman" by the mob which assaulted him with rods and sticks. After he was rescued by the police, Ansari was sent to judicial custody after being booked under IPC sections related to theft.
The deceased breathed his last on June 22, after he complained of health issues. Ansari was rushed to a local government hospital, followed by the TATA Hospital in Jamshedpur, where he was declared dead. While heart attack is stated to be the cause of death, the confirmation from autopsy report is awaited.
Azad took swipe at Modi's vision of "New India", saying that the new society which the ruling BJP envisages is build on hatred, fear and anxiety.
"I request you to keep the New India to yourself and give us our Old India where there was love, culture. Hindus used to feel the pain when Muslims and Dalits used to get hurt. When something used to get into eyes of Hindus, Muslims and Dalits used to shed tears for them," the Rajya Sabha MP added.
"In Old India there was no hatred, anger or lynching. New India is one where humans are enemies of each other. You won't be scared of animals in a jungle but you'll be scared of humans in a colony. Give us India where Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians live for each other," he further said.
